When we started River Pools and Spas roughly 20 years ago, little did we realize the type of fiberglass pool company we'd become, and certainly we never anticipated that the great State of Maryland would become such a high demand area for fiberglass swimming pools.
The history of pools in Maryland is quite interesting. What I mean by that is on the Eastern portion of the United States, each region has been identified mainly by one type of pool over the past decade or so. For example, if one travels down to Florida and South Carolina, they will see that the majority of pools are concrete/gunite construction.
Moving farther north, the majority of pools going in the Carolinas has certainly been dominated by fiberglass over the past decade. Up North, in places like New York, vinyl liner has been the most popular method of swimming pool construction.
Maryland, though, has mainly been a concrete state over the past 10 years. In fact, Maryland Pools, one of the largest concrete pool builders in the country, was installing over 200 concrete pools a year in the Terrapin state before the economic slow-down.
But over the past 18-24 months, our company at River Pools and Spas has been inundated with Maryland customers that are not only considering a concrete pool but fiberglass as well. In fact, so far this year we have installed fiberglass pools in such cities/towns as: Baltimore, Bel Air, Silver Spring, St. Mary's, Clarksburg, Chevy Chase, Frederick, Middletown, Marriottsville, Bethesda, and many others.
So, why such a shift in the Maryland pool market? Frankly, at least from what I've been able to tell, more and more people are basing their swimming pool decisions not on what their neighbors own or what they had growing up, but rather from their research online where more and more companies are pushing consumer swimming pool education.
We at River Pools share this desire which is why we continually attempt to add educational articles and videos to this blog so that customers can truly have a solid foundation on which they can make a decision as to what type of swimming pool will fit their needs.
So, will fiberglass pools in Maryland ever take over the long-time-king gunite? Well, time will tell but this much is sure: Fiberglass pools will only grow in popularity in Maryland over the coming years and we at River Pools and Spas are thrilled to be along for the ride!
